The North Cove Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is a learn to sail program designed to teach students the fundamentals of sailing small boats and an introduction to fleet racing. We offer three, two week, all day sessions with twenty-four students each session. Students range in age from nine to fifteen years old. In addition to the head instructor, we have three senior instructors teaching a total of two beginner classes and one intermediate class. Our instructors are all Level 1 trained and certified by US Sailing and are also certified in CPR and First Aid. Each session, we have three junior instructors who volunteer their time to assist with the program and in exchange, receive the opportunity to begin learning to teach. All of our junior instructors were students of the Junior Sailing Program who demonstrated exceptional sailing skills as well as a willingness to help other students and a desire to become instructors. Junior in structors are invited each year by the instructors. Another system of support are the Yacht Club members who volunteer their time each week to be another set of hands helping the instructors.

At North Cove we sail Dyer Dinghies, Hunter 90s, and 420s. Dyers and Hunters have one sail while 420s have two. The beginner sailors learn to sail Dyers with two students in a boat, while the intermediates focus on sailing the Hunter 90s, the 420s, while occasionally sailing in Dyers. These three different types of boats give students an excellent foundation for sailing many other types of boats.

Please contact the head instructor with any questions about the program.
